Angela Constance MSP has called on Labour representatives to explain their failure to support a Scottish Government motion opposing UK Government plans to cut support for disabled people.
The motion, debated in the Scottish Parliament, urged the UK Government to reverse proposed welfare reforms that, according to their own analysis, would push 250,000 people—including 50,000 children—into poverty. The Resolution Foundation estimates that lower-income households could become £500 a year poorer, while the Glasgow Disability Alliance has warned that hundreds of thousands of disabled Scots could lose out due to these “brutal” reforms.
Despite these concerning figures, Labour MSPs voted against the motion. Additionally, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar and seven other Labour MSPs failed to vote at all.
Angela Constance, MSP for Almond Valley, commented:
“Scottish Labour had a clear choice: stand with the people of Scotland or side with a UK Government inflicting harsh cuts on disabled people. Their decision to oppose the motion - or not vote at all - raises serious questions about their commitment to vulnerable constituents in West Lothian.”
“Once again, Labour in Scotland has shown an inability to stand up to the UK Government, leaving many to wonder where their priorities truly lie.”
