Celebrating Tamil New Year in West Lothian

Celebrating Tamil New Year in West Lothian

Published date : 19 May, 2025

West Lothian recently came together to mark Tamil New Year, celebrating the rich culture, heritage and community spirit of Scotland’s Tamil population at Strathbrook Partnership Centre. The event, held in the heart of West Lothian, was a vibrant occasion that reflected both the historical importance of the day and the modern-day diversity that strengthens our communities.

Tamil New Year, which begins on 14 April each year, is a time of reflection, renewal and celebration. It is marked with traditional rituals, family gatherings, and shared meals – and is a reminder of the enduring strength and warmth of Tamil culture.

Speaking at the celebration, Angela Constance MSP for Almond Valley said:

“It was an honour to join the Tamil community in West Lothian for this wonderful celebration. Tamil New Year is about new beginnings, but it is also a powerful reminder of the shared values that bind us – family, kindness, and hope. The Tamil culture is one of the world’s oldest and most vibrant, and I’m proud that communities here in West Lothian are helping to keep those traditions alive. As we look to the future, let us continue to embrace the diversity that makes Scotland such a special place.”

Tamil New Year is increasingly celebrated not only by Tamils but also by neighbours and friends from all backgrounds. Across West Lothian and Scotland, organisations such as Theiya Arts in Edinburgh and the Glasgow University Tamil Society help preserve Tamil heritage while promoting cross-cultural learning and integration.

This celebration would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the organisers, volunteers, and community members who brought the event to life. Their commitment to fostering inclusivity and cultural understanding is a testament to the strength of our diverse communities.

As Scotland continues to grow as a multicultural nation, events like Tamil New Year are a chance to reflect on shared values and build lasting connections across communities.
