Angela Constance MSP Urges West Lothian Residents to Upgrade RTS Meters Before June Deadline

Angela Constance MSP is calling on households across West Lothian to take urgent action as the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) is set to be switched off on 30 June 2025. As of March 2025, 1,877 RTS meters remain in use across West Lothian.

RTS meters, introduced in the 1980s, have been widely used in homes with electric heating and off-peak tariffs like Economy 7. They rely on longwave radio signals to switch between peak and off-peak electricity rates. However, the technology is now outdated and will be permanently deactivated this summer. 

Angela Constance MSP said:

“I urge all constituents to check whether they have an RTS meter and, if so, to contact their energy supplier without delay. Failing to upgrade in time could result in heating and hot water systems not working properly or being stuck on expensive peak rates. The upgrade to a smart meter is free and straightforward, and it’s the best way to ensure your home stays warm and energy-efficient.”

Smart meters offer several benefits, including automatic meter readings, real-time energy usage tracking, and access to a wider range of tariffs. They are the modern and reliable replacement for outdated RTS meters. 

To check if you have an RTS meter, look for a separate switch box near your meter labelled “Radio Teleswitch,” or consider whether your home uses electric storage heaters and benefits from cheaper electricity rates during off-peak periods. If you’re unsure, contact your energy supplier, who can confirm your meter type and arrange an upgrade if necessary.
